Do you know how much sugar is in your drink? A bottle of soda can have as much as 14 teaspoons of sugar. Even 100% juice can have up to 12 teaspoons of sugar. We encouraged students to drink water over juice, soda and sports or energy drinks. We reviewed how to read Nutrition Facts Labels and displayed the amount of sugar in common beverages. At the end we did experiments to show how coke can be a mild cleaning agent by placing a penny in coke and what happens to your bones without calcium by placing chicken bones and an eggshell in vinegar.

Food Borne Illness
This week we discussed Food Borne Illness. First we reviewed where our food comes from to explain how food handling in industrial farms can sometimes cause food recalls. We watched a short film called The Meatrix, which showed some of the problems with the food industry. Then we went over some of the Fight Bac! campaign’s tips for personal food handling. The best way to prevent germs from spreading is to wash your hand with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds. At the end we did an experiment with glitter to demonstrate how germs spread.
Chef Terri!
This week we had a special guest, Chef Terri, come in to do a food demonstration. We discussed healthy snacks and Chef Terri brought in some roasted chickpeas for students to try. Then she showed us how to make delicious hummus. Everyone got a chance to taste the home-made hummus with carrots. Thanks to Chef Terri for such a great treat!
